No news as such this perhaps, but still a neat summary of the Myst Series...
And towards the end a look into the [still] ongoing creation of Obduction...

Interesting interview, Max, thanks for the pointer.

I was intrigued by the passing mention of D+D and Colossal Cave (only seen as a screenshot of the opening lines)

D+D came from tabletop wargaming but was a big thing by (roughly) 1975, with published rulesets and popularity spreading from the wargaming community. So it makes sense that it was an early part of the Miller's gaming experiences.

Adventure (or Colossal Cave as it later became known) was first created in 1976 but did not become widely available until later as there were very few ways to get access to sufficient computing power. So again, it makes sense that it would be a subsequent part of their journey through gaming.

I've always thought there were parallels between Colossal Cave and Myst - one of the big draws of CC was the sumptuous descriptions of key areas, which are good enough to make you feel that you are there. Myst does the same thing, but by rising to the challenge of creating vistas, viewpoints and locations that make you stop and say "wow".

Both concentrate on exploration and problem-solving too, eschewing combat as a universal reaction on meeting anything new.

What a treat! This is just fantastic in every respect, the interview, Rand and Marc [Try4ce], of course, and the whole presentation of this extraordinary retrospective ... and yes, that's really 'timeless stuff', indeed ... Thanks for pointing us to it, Max ... :D
