My thanks especially to Janeerah who put the list together and provided pre- and post-show music as well - saved my bacon this time, Jan :)

We saw at least 23 listeners at one point, which is a goodly number for one of our shows, with even less publicity this time :o I'll try to improve...

In two weeks time, on 6th March, there will be another show. Provisionally this will be "That's a Long Song" (paraphrasing Jethro Tull a little bit), a mixture of selected longer tracks. A Magical Mystery Tour, perhaps (I'm thinking in song titles again....)

Hope to see you there

And this is the usual reminder that we will have another show for you tomorrow (Sunday 6th March) at 13 KI. This one has been put together by Malaclypse and I'm calling it "That's a Long Song" as a paraphrase of the title track of the Jethro Tull EP "Life's A Long Song". Songs from various sources including Iron Butterfly and Mike Oldfield...

Meet in the plaza - show will start at 1300 KI and run till 1500, that's 8 to 10 pm UK time (Western European Time), 9 to 11 pm for locations from Spain to Sweden (Central European Time) with some pre-show music so you can tune in your music players to the stream and post-show music for those interested in the tracks that didn't quite make the cut for the 2-hour show.

Put http://aegura.harriman4.com/8000.php in your browser to select the way you want to listen to us
or
plug http://aegura.harriman4.com:8000/stream.mp3 into your audio player of choice: proved to work with Winamp and VLC player.

I understand that the Urutunes site has a link for us too: http://www.urutunes.com

By the way, if you have an idea for a show or a setlist you'd like to share with us in the cavern, give us a shout and we'll help.

Edison Rex, Malaclypse and AlanDJ - your Radio Free D'ni team.

Tracklist for the first Long Songs show, 6th March 2016

Nothing To Fear                          Chris Rea, God's Great Banana Skin, 1992
There's No Way Out of Here               David Gilmour, David Gilmour, 1978
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V)   Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here, 1975

The Show
Butterfly Bleu                     Iron Butterfly, Metamorphosis, 1970
Here Comes The Night               The Beach Boys, L.A. (Light Album), 1979
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner        Iron Maiden, Powerslave, 1984
Ju-Ju Man                          Passport, Infinity Machine, 1976

Postshow
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX)   Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here, 1975
Black Sunday                               Jethro Tull, A, 1980

The selection criterion for this show was that the track had to be over 10 minutes long and a studio track, not a live one. Made for an interesting mixture. And we had at least 26 listeners at one point, which is very encouraging :)

In two weeks time, on 20th March, there will be another show. I watched all the Jools Holland "Later..." shows in 2015 and have chosen some tracks inpsired by what I heard there - mostly from the show itself. These are all live, of course, and include both new talent and established acts, some almost legendary. The working title is "More, Later..." Well, inspiration sometimes misses the target.

Hope to see you there.

Edison Rex, Malaclypse and AlanDJ - your Radio Free D'ni team.

A change of subject for our next show. The recent sad news about Keith Emerson, and the fact that he is of significant interest to us here at RFD means that we will be broadcasting a personal selection from his enormous discography in one weeks time.

In fact, it is really hard to choose just two hours of his stuff. My inclination at this stage is to cut a two hour set of highlights then go on, picking things from the rest of the list. I've got pretty much everything from The Nice and ELP, and woudl probably manage to respond to requests as well, if there are folks who would want to stay on. Otherwise, there is easily enough material to make up another show, or more...

Join us in a weeks time for "One Of Those People", a wander through Keith Emerson's musical works, on Radio Free D'ni.
Broadcast will begin at 13 KItime, that is Mountain Time in the US: this translates to 7pm UK time (the US has reverted to Daylight Savings time but the UK has not...) 8 pm CET.

To find Radio Free D'ni, go to http://aegura.harriman4.com/8000.php in your browser
or
plug http://aegura.harriman4.com:8000/stream.mp3 into your audio player

or go to http://www.urutunes.com and choose Radio Free D'ni...

For those in MOULa, we meet on the plaza of the public city.

Hope to see you there.

A reminder that Radio Free D'ni will broadcast a show in memory of Keith Emerson on Sunday 20th. Tracks have been chosen and we are ready to go. Ed will be here to mix, and also to tell us something of what Keith Emerson meant to him. Mal may not be there at the start, but should join us partway through. I'll be there as well. The show will start at 13 KI (Mountain Time in the US, that's 7 pm in the UK, 8 pm CET) with some preshow music for 30 minutes beforehand to let you find the channel.

To find Radio Free D'ni: Go to http://aegura.harriman4.com/8000.php in your browser

I hope everyone enjoyed the show - I kept getting sidetracked as I put it together, playing whole albums over again. It was difficult to produce the final cut.

I know that we had more than 40 people in the city, and over 30 on the plaza at one stage, but the Icecast stat's only showed a maximum of 23 listeners. I think that it underestimates some times.

There was some chat on the plaza about vocal credits for Karn Evil 9, so I've done a bit more research.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_Salad_Surgery
"Karn Evil 9" includes vocal credit for Keith Emerson, and is Emerson's only vocal credit on an ELP record.[citation needed] The only vocals he contributed to the song were the voice of the muse in the Second Impression, which was sped up, and the computer voice in the Third Impression. Emerson ran his voice through the ring modulator on his Moog Modular to achieve this sound.

And elsewhere

http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/ ... ack-594681

“There are three oscillators in the Moog synthesizer, and I detuned them slightly to give them a particular ring, very much like what I did on pianos. That worked really well on the synth horn parts. Oh, and you hear the voiceover l did, like a computer voice – I did that as a joke."

From looking at the old vinyl copy I have: -
The album sleeve notes (sctually on a poster folded up inside the sleeve) say of Karn Evil 9

Sides 1 & 2
Karn Evil 9
(Music - Emerson
Lyrics Lake & Sinfield)
1st impression* - Part 1
(Emerson - vocals
Written by Lake)

Karn Evil 9
1st Impression* - part 2 (Emerson & Lake)
2nd Impression (Emerson)
3rd Impression (Emerson, Lake & Sinfield)

The asterisks indicate that the engineer was Chris Kimsey rather than Geoff Young.

Listening to the piece, I can say that all the vocals sound very much like Greg Lake, apart from the "computer voice" in 3rd Impression and a little background gabbleing in the 2nd Impression

Also, regarding the title and what Hans Giger thought of it -

http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/ ... ack-594681

Originally, the album was to be called Whip Some Skull On Ya – a slang expression for inappropriate action[s]. The eventual title of Brain Salad Surgery, nicked from a lyric in Dr. John's hit Right Place, Wrong Time, dismayed artist H.R. Giger, who had been commissioned by Emerson to create the jarring and groundbreaking cover art. When Emerson explained that Brain Salad Surgery carried the same connotation as Whip Some Skull On Ya, Giger was greatly relieved.

Looking further into Giger's film credits, the one we all recognise is the Alien franchise. Film and SF fans will recognise the Alejandro Jodorowsky version of Dune that he also did design work for - that film was never made (David Lynch eventually created a heavily flawed movie, and John Harrison later directed a 3-part TV mini-series that was much closer to Frank Herbert's original, Hugo-winning and rather long book) but the Giger artwork can be seen in the documentary film made about the efforts to make the film, "Jodorowsky's Dune".

I can't find any Star Wars credits for him (and to be honest, I think you'd notice a bit of Giger in that universe) but there is one rather terrifying mention of a film called Killer Condom. I don't think I want to go any further down that avenue of research...

If you want to hear Emerson singing lead, listen to I'm a Man, from his score for the movie Nighthawks:

(A track which leads me to conclude that, genius musician though he was, vocals were not his strong suit.)

We had 23 listeners, which is a good number for us, and lots of positive comments, which is even better. I'm glad you liked what was a personal selection from the artists and performances featured in the last year on Later... You can watch the show on BBC Iplayer in the UK, but I think it is more difficult from other countries. It is well worth the effort.

Our next show will be in two weeks time and will be a second collection of Long Songs, chosen by Malaclypse. Ed is scheduled to be out of the country, so I will be doing the broadcast, with the assistance of Mal on the plaza.

We now have a URL, http://radiofreedni.org - this points to the Aegura channel selection page at present, while we work on the webpage for the station. Eventually it will point to a page with a simple link to click so you can listen to us.

You can still find Radio Free D'ni by going to http://aegura.harriman4.com/8000.php in your browser

or by plugging http://aegura.harriman4.com:8000/stream.mp3 into your audio player

or go to http://www.urutunes.com and choose Radio Free D'ni...

If you like us, tell your friends
If you don't like us, tell your enemies...

See you on the plaza

A reminder that tomorrow, Sunday 17th April, Radio Free D'ni will broadcast another show. This one is called "Long Songs 2: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" and is a bit of a rest after the mad 28-track panic that was our last show.

Ed is out of the country, so I will be doing the broadcast, with the assistance of Mal on the plaza.

The show will start at 13 KI (Mountain Time in the US, that's 8 pm in the UK, 9 pm CET) with some preshow music for 30 minutes beforehand to let you find the channel.

We now have a URL that's easy to remember: http://radiofreedni.org. Choose the main stream. Eventually this will be a fuller website.

Otherwise, you can stiill go to http://aegura.harriman4.com/8000.php in your browser
or
plug http://aegura.harriman4.com:8000/stream.mp3 into your audio player

or go to http://www.urutunes.com and choose Radio Free D'ni. the button may not be green, but the link still works.

See you on the plaza :)

**Edited to correct 14 KI to 13 KI... One of these days I'll learn to count.

Argh. I am later than usual. Today, in about 30 minutes time, Radio Free D'ni will broadcast part 1 of a History of Pink Floyd, put together by Malaclypse, with Ed and myself assisting in the presentation. He's going to be very upset with me....

At one point we had 25 listeners for this show, you are all Pink Floyd fans it seems.

The next show will be in two weeks time, on Sunday 15th May, at 13 KI on the plaza. This will be a show called "Anticipating Obduction", some tracks inspired by what is to come in just a few weeks time.

See you then :)

I have decided on a set list for "Anticipating Obduction", and have at least an hour of postshow stuff... I plan to carry on talking (as I'm doing the show solo, so I will not be keeping Ed at his console) since there is a lot to say.

I'd also like to ask if you have any tracks you'd find appropriate for the occasion: I may not have them, or I may decide thay don't fit my overall theme, but I'd love to hear what you would like to have in the show, and will include them if I can.

A reminder that Radio Free D'ni will be broadcasting a show from 13 KI to 15 KI tomorrow, (8pm to 10 pm UK, 9 pm to 11pm Central European Timee) ( KI time is Mountain Time in the US) well, later today.

This set is called "Anticipating Obduction" since the game we have been waiting for nearly 2 years for is to be released in June. I've been putting together some tracks loosly inspired by the look and feel of the preview images we have seen since the game was first announced.

Radio Free D'ni can be found at
http://aegura.harriman4.com/8000.php
or http://radiofreedni.org
or http://www.urutunes.com and choose Radio Free D'ni...

choose the main stream.

Or you can plug plug http://aegura.harriman4.com:8000/stream.mp3 into your audio player

Hope you can listen in and enjoy :)

MOUL folks can meet us on the plaza and exchange text chat with Mal and me

If you have trouble logging in, accept the Network Error, let the game quit then log in again. Has worked for me -may need more than one try.
