When I write the D'ni word tānēen using macrons, it's much easier to read than the OTS version, taineeehn. NTS tries to solve the problem by transliterating it as "tánéen", which would be okay if there wasn't a built-in potential for confusion. In French and in French loan words, ée is a single phoneme that sounds like "ay", so the NTS word could be mistakenly pronounced tānān.

Wrong, NTS transliterates that as téníen, so there would be little confusion. tánéen transliterates tInAen.

Code:
a I e A i E o O u U (Dnifont)
a á e é i í o ó u ú (NTS)
a ī e ā i ē o ō u ū (your system)

You're misunderstanding me, Larry. In English, "ee" represents /i:/ in IPA, and and "e" (usually) represents /ɛ/. These are fundamentally different. Using a similar grapheme for them either indicates a pronunciation shift or a heavy anglocentricism.

I don't mind macrons at all. They're less ambiguous than acutes and I'd rather use them, if not for the fact that they aren't directly typable on my keyboard. For the record, my AltGr key lets me type áéíóú directly, and alt-codes (which are rather easy to learn) provide the other characters.

By the way, I don't need to have D'ni spelling explained to me. I'd happily bet I've studied it more closely than you.

(Our tangent should probably also be split off)
