Marten's New Year's Eve 2016 Mix
A choreographed listening experience for worldwide New Year's celebrations

What happens each New Year?
  • We reflect on the events of the last twelve months.
  • We look forward, sometimes eagerly, sometimes anxiously.
  • We think about time; past, present and future.
  • And sometimes, we want a familiar melody to remind us of when things seemed simpler.
For this occasion, I have assembled a special musical journey. The theme is TIME.

How do I participate in this magical New Year's experience?
  1. Wherever you are, simply tune in at http://rel.to/martenmusic on New Year's Eve at 5PM, and listen until 1AM*.
  2. Enjoy 8 unique hours of music, with no talking, and no repeating songs.
  3. Ring in the New Year at the end of every hour as songs magically end just at the right time.**
* Begin an hour earlier & listen 'til 12:15am in UTC-11. See chart for recommended listening times.
** For time zones offset from UTC in full hour increments

I had the honor of testing this playlist for Marten and thoroughly enjoyed all of it. My assignment was to listen for any jarring transitions between songs and I failed to find any. It is, quite simply, eight hours of wonderful and varied music. I hope many of you will tune in and enjoy it as much as I have.

Feeling rather frazzled by various things, I decided to chuck it all and go dance. I tuned in Marten's program starting at 14.00 on New Year Eve, and went over to Kerryth's Leonardo pavilion in Second Life. Music and location worked well together as the sun crossed the sky and I danced as Esperanza the fractal bird flew back and forth. The music was broadly varied, wandering about the theme of time in excursions back and forth.

It was a nice time. Kerryth took a break from building her new store to come and join me for part of it, half an hour or so before I had to move over to Mieville's Mystic Yule and present my own "Silver and White Gala" set for the last Theme Dance of the year. I had given some thought to rebroadcasting Marten's music there, but the Gala was too good an opportunity to play big band music that both Perryn, who is Mieville's mayor, and I like.

Thank you, Marten. I enjoyed what I heard.
