At this stage of beta the question keeps popping up everywhere I go. It being in this forum or down in the Cavern. Many of us have used our avie name for years now and have been known to their friends by this name both in the Cavern and on multiple forums. Our names are part of how the community survived since early 2004 and how it has build up before that.

So to put the question up for votes. Should Cyan offer a plan to secure certain names that have been around for long and in some cases have added their share to the community? To prevent them from being taken by others intentionally or not.

Please add a post to this thread telling us when you started using your avie name and whether you use the same nick in the forums and if so in which. This way it becomes clear how established many avie names are.

Please also add any option you think will be reasonable and/or doable. Cyantists are invited too ;)

P.s. Having studied Market Research I realise this is not the most valid list of answers, since the answers are answering multiple things. Still I thought it might be nice to add these lines to stimulate discussion.

I voted Yes: If the player chooses. I don't think a player who has since left the community with no plans of coming back to have total rights over their name. As for my own name, I'd hate to lose it. I'll vary it slightly if the need arises, though.

I've used Old Man since my Quake days when I was older than everyone else. And since then I've used it for all my internet activities. So what's that 199x? I have Old Man emails going back to 1999 anyway but I think it goes back further than that.

I can see your point but at this stage i would prefer that we let the developers worry about the more important things such as getting Myst Online ready for release. Putting questions and polls like this to the developers this close to release can only slow everything else down, after all its just a name.

Just my 2c

This is a tough one. I don't think it would be fair to reserve names forever. Personally I would be worried about the confusion among my friends if someone else took my name.

A grace period seems like a good idea but it should be for everyone, not just for people who are considered to be well-known.

I don't think it should be a request only feature for the same reason as stated previously: Name stealing is bound to be more annoying for friends of the persons leaving, than for those persons themselves.

I've been HeadCheese since the days of dial-up BBS services, when I hosted the "Dojo of the Blue Spark BBS" back in the late 80s - early 90s. ("You kids get offa my lawn!")

I've used HeadCheese in nearly every forum, including the Cyan Chat of old, and I'd certainly hate to be preempted out of my long-standing online identity.

Just the same, it's only a name, and I can adapt if need be. In Prologue, I originally used my real name, because I bought into the You Are You aspect of the game, and wanted to be myself. I used my real name in the URU Obsession forums to maintain consistency.

My GameTap account uses HeadCheese, so I have no worries there.

I think we should have a chance to get our usernames because, inside this community, they've become just as important as our everyday names.

I voted for reserving the name for a period of time, but I would say that the reservation shouldn't be done unless the person requests the reservation.

I'm so used to my name being taken when I get places that I do not think I would personally ever make use of this. I do appreciate the attempt at limiting the confusion of having a cavern full of strangers with familiar names.

One option that I would like to see is having some way for the community to request that a name be retired.

And a question:
The game allows us to carry 5 avies per account. And there are some long standing people who do operate under multiple accounts in constructive ways. Should any reservation system, even by request, be available for all 5 slots or just one?

Agreed. I voted no but would have liked to have voted "No I don't want to waste the time of the developers" ;)

Avie name: John Lynch
Used since: 23-December 2002
Uru game:
- Uru Beta
- Uru: Prologue
- Until Uru
- Myst Online: Uru Live beta
- Uru Live Sneak Peak
Uru related Forums:
- D'ni Guild Forum
- DRC Forum
- Myst Online: Uru Live forum ;)
- Ubisoft forums
- MYSTCommunity
- Uru Obsession
- Guild of Greeters
- Age Builder
- D'ni Linguistic Fellowship
- The Narayani Collective
- DPWR

So yes, my name is definitely tied to me in the Myst community ;) But I don't want to take the developers away from getting Uru Live launched ASAP. If someone maliciously takes my name (or accidentally because they happen to share it) I'll live with that.

It should be like when you register for a forum or email adress. First come, first served and you get to keep it for ever.
