Understanding is key.

More precisely, education and trust are key. There's also a big difference between kids going on "unsafe" places of the Internet because of predators (sexual or otherwise), or because they wish to. In the former case, both the parents and the child want more protection; in the latter, the parents want draconian control over their child, whereas the child wants to discover and explore the world on its own. In the former case, parents' education of their children helps, and in the latter, parents' trust of their children does. And trust doesn't mean "I'm gonna set up a webcam and watch my child 24/7". In other words, what it boils down to is: improve your parenting skills, rather than worrying about how "evil" the Internet is.

But like you said, this is a general Internet issue, and not one Cyan in particular should have to deal with at all.

I dunno... I mean, I was nasty to someone in D'mala (actually I was just joking around, but they didn't take it that way, and neither did anyone else), and apologetically typed "/me hugs _____", and all fiery abyss broke loose.

Keep in mind that this wasn't even in a shard, where the "hug" function was included (such as it was), but even merely insinuating it, not even in a romantic way, sent several people in the room on the warpath.

So I'm kind of worried about this one.

Yeah, sometimes just when you think an emote will clear things up.. it all goes haywire..but I suppose that's just part of the hazard of human communication ... sometimes even with good (or at least innocuous) intentions.. we do just the wrong thing .. :P

I shudder to remember some of my well-meaning but disastrous communications ... some haunt me forty years later - best not go there! >_<

Hm, even a /hug can be problematic... but then, so can /me and a bit of imagination.

/shrug

Well, there are plenty of other two-person emotes I'd like to see - still waiting for /poke and /shove. :P

Apologizing profusely usually helps in any situation.
<Jill> Stop following me, you creep!
Jack hugs Jill
<Jill> Augh! Do something, sir ModeratorSir!
<ModeratorSir> Hey now, what's this?
* Jack was banned for a long, long time by sir ModeratorSir

<Jill> Stop following me, you creep!
<Jack> I'm sorry.
<Jill> If you're so sorry, why are you still following me?
<Jack> I don't know, but I really am sorry!
In conclusion, I really am sorry for sidetracking the thread like this.

I realise that this game isn't necessarily "adult" related.

The adults in this game need to realize there are a number of children (and I mean single-digit age) playing as well.

Forget the emotes. Get a Relto.

This has been a concern of mine since the first go-round with live. I do not want anyone becoming romantically involved with MY children online EVER. Romance is about being with someone, not hanging out with them in an online chatroom. There are predators out there and I worry that this forum may be used to lure the innocent.

SO, while I would have no problem with the whole romance thing here if it were an eighteen plus crowd, the inclusion of children forces me to put forth an emphatic NO.
