The ripple effects of one's love of Uru (and the D'ni) were suddenly pressed home to me this morning. Indeed, I see a few twigs of the Great Tree are still reaching out and tickling those beyond our community. Now I knew there were much greater effects outside of the Cavern, as demonstrated all over this forum as well as a myriad of other forums and MMO's. I just hadn't realized those twigs had reached the funny bone of my firmly-grounded, surface-dwelling, never-virtual husband. I posted this at the Guild of Healers (in the Healing Humor section) but I thought the ripple of a wee chuckle might help others, too.

Quote:
I woke up this morning to the sound of the garbage truck making its way around the neighborhood. That meant it would be rounding the block and arriving at our driveway in about 5 minutes. I thought briefly about just letting them pass by this week, then remembered the smell last night as I had added the latest trash bag. Being olfactor-ily motivated, I decided to investigate whether my husband had thought about the trash. I listened for a moment (the sound of trash can wheels on pavement would indicate he had heard the truck, too). Nothing. I squeaked down the old wood steps to the kitchen to ask him if he wouldn't mind taking it out since he probably had his shoes on by now. To my dismay, I discovered he had fallen back asleep on the sofa. Rats.

"Let it go," I told myself. Of course I didn't. Groggy and disheveled, I squeaked back up the stairs to don trousers and a large shirt. Gosh, not even a cup of coffee yet. I did manage to fluff my already wild curly hair so that it looked nearly normal. Then I trudged outside to move the trash can. Just in time.

When I came back in there was a fresh pot of coffee brewing. My sad situation brightened a by the smell of the brew.... I knew it wasn't finished, but I could hope.

Our coffee maker is one that pipes the hot water through one basket into a lower one that sits on a warming plate. Nice and big, with a cup dispenser at the front. It also used to have a window in the front so we could tell when the lower basket was full. It had very early on become coffee-stained so we couldn't see through it. Neither was the coffeepot gurgling loudly in the way it does when the water basket is nearly empty. I suspected I would have to wait the ten minutes for it to finish (I hadn't cleaned the water pump for a while because I'd been rather busy, so it took longer.) Rats again.

Of course, I had learned that if the lower basket was hot there was enough coffee brewed that I could at least get started with my waking-up ritual. I couldn't fill up my mondo cup, but I could at least put and inch or so of coffee in it, go up to the study, sit in my chair, and not-think. I placed my hand on the lower basket. Not very warm yet. I looked out the kitchen window at the lawn that would soon need to be mowed again and tried to only contemplate things that didn't cause stress. That wasn't much. I became aware of my husband behind me, and turned to say good morning. He was looking at the coffeepot, then smiled tiredly at me.

"Honey," he said, "Healing hands are not going to make the pot brew faster. You'll actually have to clean it."

Subject: Story licensing

Dear Ms. Ghaelen:

We were so (chortle) delighted with your recent "trash-and-coffee" (giggle) story that we'd like to chat with you about licensing broadcast rights for this. We anticipate (snerk) recording and then broadcasting the story during a Healers "Laughing Meditation" event (ggmrufh) or perhaps getting Ktahdn to read it (LOL) live. You know how that ham likes the sound of his own (ghiggle) voice!

Please contact us at your earliest convenience. Before we explode. (chortle) For more details, or to plan an event, please contact Jane.

Thank you.

Re: Laughter Meditation re: Story Licensing

Thank you for the memo regarding the up-at-some-time-coming meditation session on laughter. I have already taken your previous memos on behalf of Convector Felium under advisement – I am aware of the keen interest members of Harmonic Hilarity, Inc. have expressed in working with the Guild of Healers on this event.

I will consider your proposal regarding the above very-true-tale. I should warn you, however, an audio version of “Trash & Coffee” is unlikely to be appropriate for a meditation session. Not only would the scents make no sense to participants, the gurgling and slurping might distract them so they fail to breathe properly (if not completely). Preparations for each themed meditation require the utmost commitment on my part – I often must allow them to brew for a time before making a final decision. I have already consulted Jane concerning a laughter meditation as she and Tail’lahr have been instrumental in maintaining the appropriate atmosphere at every session thus far. We quickly concluded that a laughter meditation will take great effort; only well-grounded plans can successfully bring it about. Hence, I would be hesitant to introduce any wasteful management to the blend whose actions might interrupt the rest of the team. Should we decide to carry out this activity, we would be motivated to see that the meditation took place in a calm, sober environment. You will agree, I hope, that laughter is a serious matter and cannot be treated lightly.

For clarification, I refer you to the policies of the V.V.R.H.&H.G. which you, Lord Chaos, had at one time penned so eloquently. This statement has ever inspired my actions.

Thank you for your patience.

Ghaelen

Ghaelen,

Thank you for taking myself, Jane and our valuable time and efforts into consideration before making your decision about whether or not to host a "laughter meditation." I must admit I'm a bit skeptical of the concept, and about this Confectioner Helium character in particular. I've seen his posts on the GoH forum and he seems to be everywhere, promoting his brand of healing meditations.

I mean, c'mon, a "laughter meditation?" Isn't that an oxymoron? Meditations should be about seriously concentrating all our efforts on releasing tension, but this man would have us giggling and snickering all the way through them. How will we be able to hear our breathing over the chuckling? I'm sure that if he had his way, we'd all be rolling on the floor laughing so hard, we wouldn't even be able to catch our breath, much less regulate it.

And, how will this contribute to world peace? Do you honestly believe that just feeling good is going to make a difference? As if we could walk around spreading good vibes just by having a healthy sense of humor? Pulleeze. This world is full of cynics and septics, er skeptics even. We must hold on dearly to our own cynicism and healthy skepticism and any other valuable cisms in order to fight fire with fire.

Despite my reservations about this, I will support you in whatever decision you make regarding this. I will be there in body and mind, if not spirit. I dare him to try to make me giggle.

Sincerely,
Tai'

My advice: Just call her Spike. That should work.

Now, it could be I shoud be paying more attention to what our friend Convector is up to. I would be too but for various other demands upon my time (mountains to inspect, music to audition, additions to subtract from the pile of things to do). Stil, I really doubt he'd come out of his redoubt just to spout and rout your meditations. In an attempt at mediation (why do I feel like the grain of wheat between the millstones?) I'd like to point out that ol' Convector did a pretty good job of organizing various events that verged on hilarity but never (or at least not too often) slopped over into vulgarity.

And I've seen the list that everone else seems to have missed. Right there in black and white, impossible to fight, one potential meditation subject is laughter. Unless Someone has since edited that post, it's supposed to be there, not just made from air. Well, of course Convector would jump on that! He likes levity and is pretty good at brevity, which seems a good combination to keep a meditation from becoming all heavity.

Take a deep breath. Now... imagine Convector being serious. Yah, I thought so. Seriously... he's just trying to help in the way that he knows.

Oh... and Tai...

Lady Chaos asked me to mention three letters to you. Are you ready? "CGA."

:)

Re: More TrashNCoffee

I am sorry to report that the coffeepot remains in its "please-clean" state. Fortunately, I was able to speak with Tail'lahr briefly last night about a solution that will clear up obstructions to swifter brewing.

I am happy to report that this morning I was greeted by my husband, fresh coffee, and the lack of trash. After introducing More Virtually Major Chaos into my URU life yesterday, my husband refrained from re-slumber so I would not be further traumatized.

Thank you for your concern. Further updates are pending.

Ghaelen
