But.. Steam is an abomination to all that is holy about Uru! Cyan would never willingly lower themselves to some unclean distribution system like that! It's just not right!

Seriously... great work, Cyan.

Howdy everyone, glad to see that there are Myst games on Steam now. I have a question though:
Does anyone know if fan-created ages work with the Steam version of Uru: CC like they would for the original disc version?

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week!

I don't think anyone has tested this, but speculation is that Steam wouldn't mind additions to Uru:CC just like it doesn't mind additions to Valve games.

waste of money.

Riven doesn't run on XP (Why?) Riven also appears to be the ubisoft release, not the real DVD version (again, why?) - Uru CC is lacking things that come with both the retail AND the gog.com release (at the very least, the videos do not work, and, infact, are not even included... (this even includes the start-of-game video, featuring Atrus's letter))

From what I hear of the realMYST release (am yet to install yet), that's also horribly broken.

Really disappointed.

EDIT: Trying fan ages, will let you know how it goes.

Actually the videos are only missing, not broken. The AVI folder is missing. To make the startup video run, you need to copy the avi folder from a non-steam installation of Uru:CC or PoTS into the <install directory>\Steam\steamapps\common\uru cc folder. This fixed it for me.

That's what I'd call broken - I've purchased the game, I shouldn't need to "fix" it by using another copy i'd have to purchase to have legally. =P

Anyways.. here's the real reason for this post -

I asked RIUM+ about the screenshots... (RIUM+ being one of the few people who was there in Choru, among other things, for a long time)
First, a disclaimer,
<kaelis> rium: mind if i post this on the forums?
<RIUM+> Sure. But make sure that they know that I am trying to remember things that're nearly nine years old now so I'm probably wrong in some of these
<RIUM+> So don't quote me TOO heavily on this :P

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/ ... 1280958261
<RIUM+> First one... that's an oooold build of Ahnonay. That was taken before the age had been finished. Like, well and truly before it was finished.

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/ ... 1280958261
<RIUM+> The one of the hood with all the people? That's Plasma 1 content. That's the old avatars.
<kaelis> indeed.
<kaelis> i noticed the /tree/ symbol below the fountain.

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/ ... 1280958261
<RIUM+> The cleft was one of the many many iterations of the cleft that they went through... that one had many more ladders and bridges throughout it that they removed when they added in the windmill puzzle.

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/ ... 1280958261
<RIUM+> Eder Kemo's shot is from when Eder Kemo was first released. iirc that's Steve Ogden's avatar since the age was mostly his work... I think
<RIUM+> That's from when they were transitioning to Plasma 2's engine
<RIUM+> Eder Kemo was an age designed for testing the abilities of Plasma as a tech demo age...
<RIUM+> To make sure that they had all the features that they wanted etc
<RIUM+> When those screenshots were taken it was a little further along in the transition to the current Plasma engine...
<RIUM+> The shadows and lighting at that point was a little different and I remember them tweaking that a bit

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/ ... 1280958261
<RIUM+> Library shot... not much I can say about that; not too much has changed since then. It probably was from when there was Journeys throughout the city as well

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/ ... 1280958261
<RIUM+> Gahreesehn control room... don't recognise that shot; may be new.
<kaelis> not new
<kaelis> note the imager >.>
<RIUM+> That image isn't still on the imager? >_>
<RIUM+> I have no idea what's "current" any more >.<
<RIUM+> I thought that was displayed once you "fixed" Gahreesehn?
<kaelis> nope
<kaelis> ..uh
<kaelis> fixed?
<kaelis> you don't fix gahreesen =P

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/ ... 1280958261
<RIUM+> Great Tree... that shot's an ancient one iirc
<RIUM+> DIRT days.
<RIUM+> I've long had a theory that that tree model was from before/soon after Cyan acquired HeadSpin... it has a look about it that's very distinctive of the stuff when Plasma was running Glide
<RIUM+> But I don't know

http://cdn.steampowered.com/v/gfx/apps/ ... 1280958261
<RIUM+> Cleft shot... can't remember when that one was taken. Before they put up the fence though.

Hokay.. using the usual fan ages stuff - upgraded ki, etc... caused a crash complete with stackdump. Wheee.

complete waste of money. I'll take this as - Fan Ages DO NOT WORK. Fail.

(Stackdump that doesn't happen doing the exact same things in a normal, retail install)

It might have been an oversight... it might have been a licensing issue. Who knows? It's obvious that it works if the files are there... the bink DLL is there. Now that I can post on the Steam forum, maybe I will ask the question "Where's my missing 37MB?"

i doubt it is a licensing issue - the gog.com version has them.

Additional issues -

So, Uru: CC is a little broken, realMYST is a little broken, Riven doesn't work in XP, Riven seems to be the CD version of the game...

Hooray for Cyan on Steam!

Man, I'm ashamed of the quality of games in Steam. Imagine someone new coming to the games and seeing this broken stuff. OUCH!

I understand that they're a bit busy, but if you're putting your well-known franchise *anywhere*, you make sure it's working.

I submiitted the missing videos issue to Steam support. Now let's see if I ever get a response (satisfactory or otherwise).

This problem has always been there since the original internet site for Uru went down. It happens when you load ABM and/or PoTS. The old UL game server is not there anymore. If you click thru the tabs you can get the readme to show. This is just a leftover from when the offline game let you jump to the online version. It is not exclusive to the steam installation.

no... that's not the case, johnsojc

the first shot is immediately opened, in ucc on steam.. the second is my ucc retail install.

One of these things does not look like the other....

in other words, the ucc on steam is missing a file my ucc install has.It has nothing to do with the missing original UruLive site. hence why i posted both my ucc retail install, and my ucc steam install.

Read my post carefully... I did not say the retail install of Uru:CC. I said Uru:ABM + PoTS (retail) install which is where the problem is evident. I always get the first example when I start PoTS. Arguing over different distributions is pointless. One shows the problem the other doesn't. Makes you wonder if the Steam distribution is really Uru:CC or just ABM with the two expansion packs overlaid. The Uru:CC distribution must have a different version of urulauncher.

Yeah, as good a thing it is for Cyan to finally have games on Steam, they've done a poor job of it. I've got shots from inside the actual game I could take and send to Cyan if they wanted to replace those old shots. While it's nice to see the old stuff and see how Uru has progressed, it leads to a false impression of the game.

If we can figure out what is making user created content crash the steam version of Uru, I'm sure that will make a lot of steam users, and possible newcomers, grateful. There's got to be some kind of workaround to the steam version. :)
