maybe this will interest some of you ...

Image

is a heightmap in Grayscale of the Myst Island for generate land under various 3D software ...

Here is an example of its use in Terragen with the plug-in "Firmament" (free version ... why must convert the image into 256x256 pxl. bmp to 30% of scale)

Image

if you want to try it ... correct it ... post the images here for example

That's pretty sweet. Perhaps I'll do something with it with my Myst Book project.

Did you make it yourself? It doesn't look "eroded" enough if you know what I mean. I know Robyn Miller (Tinselman) have released some heightmaps from Riven, never saw one from Myst though...

It looks really nice from this Angle. I see you made the small dome (right?) as golden as the large one though. I'm more into hand-drawing the maps myself, but I'm tempted in feeding this into Maya or Bryce just to see what it makes. And as for the Myst heightmap, I think your scale in your render is a bit off as well, look at this image here:

And you can see how high the island borders are at some points. Also, the erosion is more pronounced here.

But, in spite of that - very good work! :)

The second dome is a trying ... is not the real dome ...

for the scale of the Myst island it's a difficult stuff on terragen ... the texture of the terrain is very small so that give the illusion of a large island ... the distortion of camera give a distortion of proportion too ... But you rigth the hill of my map is high ... i will corrige that ...

nifty stuff. i didn't know Greyscale wasn't outdated software by now. Cyan used Greyscale to render the terrain of Myst Island, of course, way back in the early 90's. someone mentioned there's a free version of Greyscale? mind posting a link, anyone?

seems like there's a fair number of 3D artists commenting on this thread. any links to free versions of moddeling, rendering, texturing and animation software that might be suited for a newbie? i've attempted blender. i found the interface to be quite unintuitive.

keep tackling the finished product. trying to mimic the renders of objects seen in Myst is a great way to build prowess.
and be sure to keep posting the results. they're interesting to see.

Indeed Blender is definitely not intuitive! but it's like the mountain that offers several route to reach the top ...

in 3D software available for beginners (and which uses "still" the grayscale)

There is

(The Great) Terragen Classic (which you can import into Blender using the accessory "Ter2Blend" and import heightmap with accessory "Firmament")
World Machine
TerraMaker
Wilbur

for heightmap you can find them on the blog of Robyn Miller
