I agree, Chiro, this is all really great information, thanks everyone ...
I'm impressed by dgelessus' great and very short history of the development of our operating systems, but what is absolutely awesome and very much appreciated is korovev's pointer to the DGBL, an easy to use Graphical User Interface for the DOSBox, which is really a very precious thing to have, if you're not knowledgeable in or willing to work with DOS command line operations ...
It is a multi-platform interface for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux (both x86 and x64), which comes in many languages and with an already integrated DOSBox ... So you just have to set profiles for your games (they say DGBL can handle thousands of them), where you can even receive information for them from the internet, and you can configure everything, your DOSBox, it supports multiple DOSBox versions, the graphics, the sounds etc. etc. in many many ways, and you can do all of this very easily, just as you're used to on your Windows/Mac/Linux OS ...
That way I was able to once again look into my very first computer game 'Lost Eden' by Cryo and Virgin Interactive, released 20 years ago ... Yeah, that's where I was coming from, I just loved their games, like the Atlantis series afterwards, the 'Ring: The Legend of the Nibelungen' etc. etc., which are Myst-like (or more Syberia-like) but not really for Myst/Riven fans, because they're too easy I suppose lol, but I prefer the magic and beauty over heavy puzzle solving lol ...
However, yes, great and valuable information, and everyone, who didn't know this like me, can now grab their old CDs and DOS games, before discarding and getting rid of them once and for all lol, and play them once again in a slightly better quality on nowadays big, high quality monitor screens ...
