Fascinating find, Artic_Wagon! Thanks for sharing the link.

The story did not tell us if he is an Uru Live fan who found the inspirations in the Minkata age. (re: the mintaka star in the Orion belt)

I applaud the young kid’s effort and it’s exciting to see such interest in the ancient Maya and remote sensing technology in such a young person. However, ground-truthing is the key to remote sensing research. You have to be able to confirm what you are identifying in a satellite image or other type of scene. In this case, the rectilinear nature of the feature and the secondary vegetation growing back within it are clear signs of a relic milpa. I’d guess its been fallow for 10-15 years. This is obvious to anyone that has spent any time at all in the Maya lowlands.

And even after debunking still no one askes the obvious question how on Earth you would determine the scale of the "starmap", that they should have asked themselves straight away.

Hi Artic_Wagon
This would not be the first civilization to build monuments that mirror the stars. The 3 big pyramids in Egypt reflect Orion's Belt. While in Cambodia the ruins at Angkor Wat et al reflect the constellation Draco. Who knew?

Sorry, but the positioning of the pyramids on the Gizeh plateau reflect the shape of the rock-shelf they stand on.

Honestly,
they are talking not about Orion as a whole but about the the giza three pyramids looking like the Orion belt (3 main stars).

and yes they are on same alignment...

They look like any random three-points alignment. Most pyramids were built along the west bank of the Nile.

I am no specialist, interested in history among other things, but not professionally and more interested in tool use and technology of Neanderthal man than ancient Egypt. A very different, less convoluted, but equally interesting area at least to my opinion.

As far as I know they saw the stars as evil spirits, expelled and doomed, banned for ever, unable to be reborn. Hungy and conspiring to return to the world only to be send off by the sun each morning. Not even Seth, twin brother and murderer of Osiris and usurper of his position was punished that harshly, but banned to remain in the underworld, a much kinder fate.
In most of the cases that the firmament was depicted the stars are shown in a regular grid.
Like this example in Saqqura;
http://www.scalarchives.com/web/dettagl ... agini=341&
And this one in Luxor;
http://m.inmagine.com/image-ptg01476984 ... Egypt.html
It is perhaps interesting to note that the stars are drawn as five pointed stars rather than squares.
To me it seems unlikely they would have build anything in accordance to a constellation, or better part of one, especially if there are very real practical reasons, in this case geology and stability requirements, to explain the actual positioning adequately. As far as i know Orion's belt is missing the seven smaller pyramids present at the site among a host of other contemporary structures. And again as far as i know there are no structures in the positions of the four bright stars at the corners of Orion to be found.

But like i stated earlier i am no specialist so equally prone to speculation as anyone else.
Long time Myst fan Baladria knows a lot more about ancient Egypt then I do.
She better :wink:
