Does anyone know - or have any effective way to estimate - the actual number of players in MO:ULagain?

I know we have a lot of activity in the cavern - that much is clear given the lag and server crashes, but do we have any way of figuring out precisely how many people are playing the game?

I ask because if there are a large number of new players, that'd be really awesome to know; our community needs new players to grow and thrive and (ultimately) sustain the game and make it viable.

I think the fact that this game is free, may have resulted in an increased number of players in-game, but how can we tell (with any accuracy) just how many we have?

Anyone from Cyan able to tell us how well MO:ULagain is doing in terms of player count?

Is there any accurate way to determine player count from KI numbers, maybe?

I've seen people with KI numbers of 500,000+; does that mean there are over 500,000 people who have signed up for MO:ULagain (or, rather, 500,000 avatars - some people have more than one avatar/character in the game)

Does aybody know for sure how KI numbers are assigned or if this is actually the case? If there are actually several hundred thousand people in the game already, that'd be awesome.

I think the KI starts off around 5 digits when you first start entering the cavern. i was one of the first few people to get in teh game and my ki is in the 40000

KI numbers aren't starting with 000000 and counting like 000001 000002, if I remember correctly they are in fact shared with other parts of Uru (can't remember what though). So while your KI could be 502302, all that means is 502301 things were assigned numbers that were drawn from the same pool as the KI's before you.

Someone with more knowledge can expand and correct. :P

If it is any help, I registered two avies in quick succession, heading off to collect the KI as quickly as I could (say no more than 5 minutes between). One avie has KI number 137263, the other 138156.

From what I've heard, every item in the vault is given an ID, and the KI number an explorer gets is their ID. Their ages have one too, so when an explorer visits 5 ages, that's 5 more items to be indexed.. or something like that.

KI numbers are no better a method to predict population than DRC(X) Bevin count is. I suspect we'd have to ask Cyan.. quite simply they can probably take a look at their account creation and know exactly how many accounts have been made. It won't cover people who make multiple accounts but it could give a baseline. Whatever the number is it's obviously far more than they expected :D

You get your KI# at the same moment you create the avie. In fact you can retrieve your KI# even without fetching your KI in Gahreesen by just making a picture of your avie in the wardrobe. The picture is stored in "My Documents\Uru Live\Avatars" with the KI# you got as its name :)

Chogon made a comment in another post (that I can't easily find right now) that around 3000 people were downloading the game.
There are a couple of things that mean the true figure may be slightly lower: If they were counting email addresses, then some people will have submitted two or three addresses if they didn't get their download link email message back quickly.
If they were counting IP addresses for downloads, then some people could be trying to download either on Dynamic IPs of from multiple machines on different ISPs.

But 3000 is probably a good figure to start with. There are a lot of new people around; how long they stay around might be a different matter, but right now the game feels busier than it ever was under GameTap. That has to be good for the future of the game and for Open Source, once Cyan can deliver that.

the first day Rand (in the city) mentioned that 2000 had already signed up then the next day someone, maybe Chogon, can't find it either. . . said there were 3000 waiting to sign up so it could actually be a lot more than 3000

Chogon was in Kirel today/yesterday and he estimated around 5000 players, though he added that it was only a very rough estimate.

Yeah it was a "don't quote me on that" number, so it was probably an educated guess. I doubt he was looking at accounts while playing.

Sweet Jesus Almighty! lol. 5,000 players? isn't that the half-way mark of gametaps "profitability" or the game? (it was 10,000 if i recall correctly. but don't quote me on that.)

And it's worth remembering that all the donation money is going back into Uru - I don't know what the deal was with GameTap and the $10/$12 per month or whatever it was for MO:UL, but it probably only paid Cyan a few cents of that - A dollar at most I'd guess.

Ah yeah - I forgot his exact wording. Also, sorry for quoting you, Chogon :P
