Radio Free D'ni
Show 89, on Sunday April 1st, will not be an April Fool show: it will be about Cat Stevens, a musician with two or three careers - pop star in the early '70's, folk-rock for the bulk of the '70's and his greatest successes: and after a long retirement, returning as a multi-talented artist with a new name, Yusuf. I will cover all of his sixteen studio and two live albums, picking personal favourites.

Join us, and see what we come up with Use the internet links posted at the top of the home page on
http://radiofreedni.org

Or you could go to
http://www.urutunes.com
and choosing the Radio Free D'ni button.

The stream will only be active for about four hours, starting from approximately 7:15 pm (UK) with a silent stream (that will still allow you to connect to it) and with a preshow set beginning at about 7:30 pm (UK). The main show starts at 8 pm UK, 9 pm European (CET) or 3 pm Mountain Time in the USA and will last for about two hours, and there will be about half an hour of postshow music to finish things off.

In the game we meet on the plaza of the public instance of the City, and if you are in Second Life you can find our rebroadcast in TJ's Dance Hall, hosted by Ainia DaFente.

Notes and playlist now published on radiofreedni.org, including translations for the foreign language lyrics. The Cat Stevens show was well attended but I'm sure it would have had a larger audience if I'd realised it was going to go out on Easter Sunday, and rescheduled it. Nevertheless, we had 14 most of the time and a maximum of 19.

I am considering doing a second broadcast with the same playlist this coming Sunday at the usual time, if there is sufficient interest. Please let me know. It is likely to be a solo show, as it's not fair to load my colleagues down with another out-of-band commitment. Same notes, possibly different jokes...

No takers for a rerun, so we will not do one.

The latest Radio Free D'ni show, (http://radiofreedni.org) coming on Sunday 29th, will be a set for Earth Day. It is about time we did one, and it will be wide-ranging and full of stars. Enya, Cat Stevens, ZZ Top, The Temptations, Renaissance, Alain Stivell, Xosé Manuel Budiño and Vangelis, and I'm not even halfway through. Join us on Radio Free D'ni on Sunday 29th April at 8 pm UK time (9 pm European time, 1 pm Mountain Time in the US.) and share some songs and stories about Earth Day.

See if you can guess which tracks from the artists named above we will play.

This will be our 91st show. Use the internet links posted at the top of the home page on

To complete the artist list - Dave Pegg and PJ Wright, The Beatles, Passport, Gandalf, Gordon Lightfoot, David Gilmour, Cialyn, Tom Paxton, Joni Mitchell, The Kinks, The Eagles, Youssou N'dour (with Alain Stivell) and Spyro Gyra. The tracks from some of these will be easy to guess.

This Sunday will see Radio Free D'ni (http://radiofreedni.org) show 92, which will be about the group that melded jazz and rock to produce a seamless result, Steely Dan. There is too much for me to choose from, so I have wimped out and spread the selection over two shows. Part 1 will take you from the beginnings to their most perfect album, Aja.
Come and groove with us.

Excitement! Something new!
Well, yes, all of that, but also a new voice and a new member of the team - my old friend Hugh Lynch has put together a set of tracks, by Frank Zappa or notable covers thereof. Zappa is not prominent in my stash, and we've not gone in this direction before, so I'm excited about this. What's more, Hugh and I have some ideas for further shows - watch this space for news.

This Sunday will see Radio Free D'ni (http://radiofreedni.org) show 93, which will feature Frank Zappa, as musician, composer and all stops in between. Remember "Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible."

This Sunday, 10th June, the 94th Radio Free D'ni show will be broadcast starting at 13:00 KI (where KI time = US Mountain Time), which is 8 pm in the UK and 9 pm in CET.
We will cover Steely Dan albums from Gaucho up to Everything Must Go, solo albums by both Becker and nice people, and slbums that Walter Becker produced for other artists, including China Crisis, Rosie Vela, Fra Lippo Lippi and Rickie Lee Jones. There will also be a couple of tracks from Donald nice people in collaboration with Steve Khan and most recently Todd Rundgren. Something for everyone there, I think.

Would you ever consider doing a tribute in the cavern featuring Rick Wakemans' "Journey to the Center of the Earth"? It's seems appropriate enough...

It's an interesting idea, certainly. One album is perhaps a little thin to fill up a 2 hour show. Perhaps there are related items we could include though. PM us, or find us in the cavern, or something if you have an idea for a full playlist :) We can probably help find some relevant tracks to add in - Gerry Mulligan's score for the film "The Subterraneans" comes to mind straight away. And the famous Pink Floyd track "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict"

There's Andreas Vollenweider's "Caverna Magica," which is good. Runs about 40 minutes.

The Moody Blues have done... "Journey to Amazing Caves," or some such, but it's not very good. Recycled.

Cavern Choir songs would fit, and some of Turjan's earlier music has a cavern feel to it.

Maybe some songs from the "Aladdin" soundtrack. Gabrielle Roth has "Crystal Cavern," and Paul Winter "Cave of the Winds."

Thanks for those suggestions, Lord Chaos. I hadn't heard of Vollenwender before - it seems he recorded Caverna Magica in a studio built into caves in Bern. Could be very appropriate. I'll run it past Edison, who is much better acquainted with electronic music than I am.
I can't match anything by the Bluudy Moos with caves, perhaps you are thinking of Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth, which of course fits quite well.
Not sure where I would get the Cavern Choir stuff from. I've got pretty much everything Turjan has done, and there's lots that would fit.
Being a bit of a wierdo, the first thing that comes to mind when you mention Cave of the Winds is a John Varley novel, Wizard, part of the Gaea trilogy about an environment in Saturn's orbit that is also a living being, a very good hard SF work I think. I find it is also a tourist site at Niagara Falls. I'll look for the music :)
I could cheat just a little and include some march music, as Wizard's chapter titles are all march music titles, a lot by Souza. Come to think of it, there are plenty of march titles with cavern-like themes.
