So if you are going to send someone a private message and they go offline, the message becomes public. I would like to put in a request to change this in new MOULa builds.

Many an explorer has been embarrassed by this experience, but I don't know if a solution is really possible. In other worlds and applications, the private message is handled completely separate from local or group chat. All of our chats run together. If there are no names on your Buddies or Neighbors lists, you can't speak to that channel. In other applications, it doesn't matter if you're the only one in the group, you can still post something.

Might just be best to carefully consider everything you say in private chat. ;)

I started this discussion in hopes that someone working on the code might have an idea for a future update. I am not fimaleir with the code, so I don't know how easy this is.

Chat always defaults to "normal" or public if the PM target becomes unavailable because the client doesn't know that your chat is intended to be private. Generally, when someone goes offline (and you know about it) defaulting to public is exactly what you what; the problem occurs when that person goes offline unexpectedly and you don't notice that the destination has changed. There's no easy way for the client to tell the difference between someone going offline with or without your knowledge - there's no way for the client to determine your "intent".

Aside from that, there are cases (e.g. when the KI issues start to build up and a server restart gets towards being needed) where PM chat messages can end up at the wrong person. So, a couple of "key takeaways" that everyone should heed:
  1. Don't say anything in PM that might embarrass you if it became public, and
  2. If you want a secure conversation, don't have it in MOULa.
