I'm unfamiliar with how shards work, and also someone who wanted to start on Uru Live ages ago, but could never quite find the time and money, so I'm wondering, from a technical perspective... how possible would it be to do set up a Shard that emulated the prior storylines and experience?

I know that heavy staff involvement in events and such would make a 1:1 copy virtually impossible even without understanding the technical limitations, but I could definitely see the appeal of a broad-strokes emulation of, say, the Gametap era. Are there technical obstacles? Legal ones?

Cliff notes:

  • Shard: Separate and distinct server to play the game. Shards do not interact. Shards use an open source server, currently "MOSS" (OpenUru.org) or "Dirtsand" (Guild of Writers).
  • Technical*: Be a *nix guru.
  • Legal*: Only Cyan's MOULa shard can serve their data files. Fan age rights are defined by their creators. Once downloaded for the open source client, you can play on any shard. Cyan ages may run only on the Cyan Worlds Engine (CWE) aka Plasma.
  • Legal/Story: Guidelines for Official Story/Age Creation: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=15890
  • Financial*: No profit.
  • Volunteers*: Hard to come by for any great duration.
  • Artists/Developers*: Expensive. See Volunteers. Require deep knowledge of CWE (see Legal).
  • Legal/Financial*: If you want a full start Uru Live with staff, contact Cyan Worlds and make a revenue-sharing deal using a stable and committed investor. Cyan is available for game development, QA, production and support for a fee. ;)

The main issue with recreating the Gametap era, legal aspects aside, is that the Episodes were led by actual employees, not NPCs. See Volunteers ;)
