I wanted to try something different, so I came up with the design below. I originally wanted to do it using beveled glass, but was unable to produce a piece of beveled glass that didn't look like melted plastic or something. :( So, I converted it to regular glass just to see how the design would look.

I don't think I'll be able to fiddle this one into submissable quality in time for the deadline, though. But, I thought it was far enough along to be worth sharing.

If anyone knows of a good beveled-glass tutorial for Paint Shop or Photoshop, please clue me in! I would like to get the tricks figured out for some future designs I would like to play with.

Actually, if you converted the tree portion back to the way it was with beveled glass, then left the rest the same, I think it'd look pretty good!

Now that's a really great piece of restoration you have there, Zen... I especially liked the touch of antiquing in the sky circle, whichs adds a real polish to the overall scheme. I can see you spent some time on this one. :)

and, all i can say is: wow to all the new ones recently loaded on the thread.... :P

I have seen some really beautiful windows in this forum and in the cavern. You all have real talent in design. And I should know because I grew up in a home filled with stained glass (Mom is one of the top window designers in the southern US -- does a LOT of churches)

If anyone wants to know about the RL history of stained glass I will be happy to tell all, but won't bore you with it unless you want to know.

The biggest thing to remember about stained glass windows is that they are windows -- meant to let in light even through the opaque parts of the design. Therefore all the "windows" should have light spots in the center of each piece of glass, getting darker as the glass mets the lead.

Anyway I am really impressed.

Thanks for the comments Moiety, Maratanos and Sosiqui. I brightened it considerably before submitting it, making sure the colors didn't wash out. See the updated version in the original post.

Mortal Monkey, that is perfection. I haven't browsed the thread and looked at all of them, so I'm not passing some ultimate judgment here. But the scratched-in "DRC" adds so much character. It's something I'd genuinely be intrigued by in-game.

Congrats.

Thank you. I've had a look at all the submissions in this thread, and I can tell you that my victory is far from assured. None the less, I'm quite happy with my entry.

Not necessarily - it depends on the cut and texture of the glass. Check out these pictures:

Some of the pieces are lighter on the edges than they are in the centre.

Looking real nice MM.... I sure wish I could've had a spot of sun shining through that window... it's got a real polish to it. Great job...

In fact when I analyse all the Stained glass pieces made by Cyan for the game, it's like these pieces are made with Yoghiogheny Glass with grisaille on it... Always have deep colours, good contrast and lighted from the back.

This made for a good distraction today. I don't think it can compete against some of the ones here, but hopefully someone will like it.
Image
I really wish I could have bordered it with a couple pillars, but oh well.
The circular border is supposed to resemble the circle on the entrance platform. The center circle is supposed to be the center pond, with the fountain on top of it. There's a cottonseed in the air, halfway to the ground are some stone walls, and on the ground itself are grass, cattails, scattered water, and some rocks.

And yeah, the number of arms on the star is important too. Initially there were eight, like on the floor of the gazebo, but I think this looks better.
I like it, it's really pretty and simple but full of nice touches.

I can't decide whether the spiral being off center is ok or not.
